Social Skills Groups

Social Skills Program for Children Ages 5-16
Sessions meet once weekly and run for six weeks at a time.

For new students, the first session consists of a mini assessment to be conducted by OPAC’s Clinical  Supervisor, Junne Park, BCaBA.   Placement into Session A or B will be decided after application and intake/assessment interview.  We will have three age levels; 5-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years.

Program Description

OPAC’s social skills program focuses on helping children and per-adolescents develop greater awareness and understanding of perspective different from their own as a way to improve functional communication skills, develop relationships with peers, and how to deal with their own emotions and behaviors as well as the environment that they interact with.

  • Ages 5-8 will focus on: appropriate play, sharing, social greetings, conversational skills and answering questions to name a few.
  • Ages 9-12 will focus on: intermediate play behavior, independent self regulation, understanding emotions and flexibility.
  • Ages 13-16 will focus on: understanding emotion, problem solving, non-verbal communication skills, conversation, appropriate tone of voice in social settings, body language, etc.
The individual needs of the learner are carefully assessed in the formation of the groups so that participants with similar abilities in language, and social awareness will be grouped together.  They will also be grouped be age.  Groups will be between 3-5 learners.
Homework assignments are an important part of the program.  Each learner will be given a short assignment that will require help from the family and in some situations, the school.  Regular attendance is very important as the next week’s lesson scaffolds from the previous one.
